Jasmine Costumes: The Desert Moon Dress

Greetings, friends! I’m going to attempt to keep today’s blog post shorter on the words and heavier on the photos. It’s easier on the eyes and far easier on my mental capacity 🙃.

Today we’re talking about The Desert Moon Dress. The original dress itself is gorgeous as you can see here:

It’s not featured very heavily in the movie however, and I think that’s a crying shame. We see this dress only for a few seconds near the beginning when Jasmine waits for Aladdin to return to the palace as promised.

In my etsy browsings for Indian trims to finish out the previous Jasmine outfit, I came across this etsy store full of so many amazingly beautiful and surprisngly affordable fabrics (It also happens to be owned by the same people who own the lovely trim store I shared about last post.) The fabrics for both the outer dress and under dress were on here and you know the rest: it was a no brainer to add to my cart and make it happen.

Because it’s not one of the more prominent dresses, I haven’t seen any costume reproductions of it thus far (other than a majorly overpriced costume by Disney), so I like to think we did something unique here. And by we, I mainly mean Jessica, because she was the one who drafted the pattern 😁. Waaaaaaaay above my pay grade.

We simplified the construction to make it easier for a 4 year old to wear. I also wanted it to be in two separate pieces both for practicality and to give even more variety to her already expansive Jasmine wardrobe. You can never have too many costumes, right?? But I’m really glad we did it this way because the under dress is pretty enough to be worn on it’s own.

There’s some definite regency era undertones to this costume, and the underdress itself is full on regency style. My inner Lizzie Bennett is quite pleased.

For the outer dress, we modified the closure to make it easier for her to get the dress on and off.

My absolute favorite part of this dress is the sleeves!

I just love how big they are. I found this gorgeous vintage Indian veil on Etsy and there was just enough left after cutting it down to her size to add another layer to the sleeves like she has in the movie.

I haven’t quite decided which is my favorite of the Jasmine costumes made so far, but this one is definitely in the running for the top spot. I love it’s departure from the traditional “Jasmine” colors, it’s historical feel, and it’s overall understated regal elegance. It’s a princess dress for a woman of strength and I hope my little girl feels a little of that when she wears it.

In between the everyday moments of being a homeschooling mama, I love browsing Pinterest, thrift shopping, party planning, and sewing costumes for my kiddos (and, let's be entirely honest here, myself!). The size of my pocketbook is often much smaller than the size of my dreams, but I've learned not to let that stop me. I've found that all you need is a little creativity, careful planning, and some outside-the-box-thinking to create something memorable. So follow along to see what we can come up with next.
